PROFILE

Tom Keene is artist technologist, whose work focuses on the intersection of technology, communication and participation. Since 1998 he has worked as a freelance programmer and designer for web, networks and physical computing platforms. With his multi-diciplinary work ranging from collaborative website design and development, hi-tech sensor driven environments, reactive video and robotic installations to participatory arts projects in community settings.

An avid follower of an ever changing technological landscape, quick to tackle and learn new software, devices, APIs or languages should a project require. People focused and exceptionally easy to work. Experienced in the delivery of mixed media (web, video, sound, photography) workshops, physical computing workshops (Arduino) and software courses with adult and youth groups, both as an arts practitioner and facilitator / mentor in arts, community and educational settings.

    2009 recollection.kettlesyard.co.uk Development of a cross-generational oral history archive that reflects how people think and feel about Kettle’s Yard.     2006 Exploring 20th Century London: Development of custom project management platform for this partnership between four museums: Museum of London, London Transport Museum, Jewish Museum, London Museum of Croydon. Jointly funded by the MLA Designation Challenge Fund and the London Museums Hub.

    2006 CYPSEG: Creation of DVD video promoting and explaining the positive effect of "Children's & Young Peoples Services in East Greenwich". Aimed at the wider community, and potential funders. Key points it aims to cover are: Giving youth a voice, Building confidence & self esteem, Developing social skills, Accreditation, Benefits to the wider community.
    2005 Under their skin: Participatory video production, working with a group of elderly residents of sheltered housing and young people living in deprived areas of south London. Greenwich Council & Arts Council England and Lottery Funded.
    2005 London Isn’t Venice… yet: Production of environmental street theatre performed along the canals and rivers of London. Funded by Bridge House Trust.
    2005 Non-violent Direct Action: Cluj-Napoca. 5 day training course in “The history of non-violent direct action from Ghandi to modern day political activism”, leading to development of collaborative website, maintaining international connections, knowledge sharing of individual, work, practice and actions.
    2005 Johannesburg: Arts for social change. An exploration of ways of applying artistic processes toward social change. Including workshop delivery and research into arts practice within socially challenging environments. Voluntarily funded.
    2005 Mozambique: Free Expression. Donated laptops and delivered workshops in the creation of a student newspaper at the Escola Secundária de Nampula, a school in northern Mozambique. Voluntarily funded.
    2005 Phantasmagoria: Explored the supernatural through an interactive audio-visual installation and live performance. Presented at The Hayward Gallery in conjunction with the "Eyes Lies and Illusions" exhibition.
    2005 Viewpoints: CMS Website. On the same day, 141 young people across London took photographs of one day in their lives. They had been invited by 16 Children's Fund Partnerships to capture their ViewPoints on digital camera. Funded By Greenwhich Childrens Fund.
    2005 Kuk Dong: Participatory arts film and web project produced with young people from a council estate in Tulse Hill. Funded by Lambeth Council.

    2003 Building Information Warehouse: Production of CD ROM utalising the custom built CD-EDIT system.
    2001 Regeneration: A WYSIWYG xml based web-editing tool build created with flash. part of Macromedias beta-testing program, one of the first people in Europe to utilise flash’s new XML object within an application.
    2001 World Rally Championship: Production Of CD ROM presented in Monte-Carlo. In collaboration with 23red creative agency.
    2001 Make Some Noise: Recruitment cd-rom illustrating the range of NHS jobs. 
Commissioned by NHS.
    2000 CD-EDIT: Development of WYSIWYG cd-rom editing tool.

    Simulacra Media 1998-2000

    2000 Sci-fi channel: Development of experimental interfaces and digital strategy for internet/broadband presence for the Sci•Fi Channel.
    2000-2001 Digital architecture: Director of Research and development. Devoloped innovative CD-ROM’s, websites and custom content management tools and applications for online and offline use.
    2001 Netgain: Project co-ordinator, designer and researcher for Simulacra Media in the development of a prototype web site designed to help arts graduates position themselves in the freelance market.
    1998-2000 Local Heritage Initiative: Project co-ordinator, designer and researcher for Simulacra Media in the development of a prototype and production of a report to: make recommendations on the potential use of IT in the Local heritage Initiative. The Countryside Agency was granted their funding of 8 million pounds.
